Showing of Greenfire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time

Aldo Leopold is considered the most important conservationist of the twentieth-century. He is the father of the national wilderness system, wildlife management and ecological restoration. His classic book A Sand County Almanac inspires us to see the natural world as a community to which we belong. Green Fire explores Leopold's personal journey of observation and understanding and reveals how his ideas resonate today with people across the entire American landscape, from inner cities to the remotest wildlands. The film challenges viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the land community. (73 Minutes)

Mud Season Movies: Facing the Climate Change

NOVA explores ways that scientists are facing the climate challenge.

Weathering the Future: As extreme weather in the U.S. impacts more people–with longer heat waves, more intense rainstorms, megafires, and droughts–discover how Americans are fighting back by marshaling ancient wisdom and innovating new solutions.

Chasing Carbon Zero: The U.S. recently set an ambitious climate change goal: zero carbon emissions by 2050. And to achieve that, slash emissions in half by 2030. Is it possible? And what kind of technology would it take? Meet scientists and engineers who are convinced we can achieve carbon zero in time to avoid the biggest impacts of climate change.

Arctic Sinkholes: Scientists investigate colossal explosions in Siberia and other evidence that rapidly melting soil in the Arctic is releasing vast amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. What are the implications for our climate future?

A Day Without Night and a Night Without a Day Presentation

A Day Without a Night and a Night Without a Day! Observing and Understanding the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

with Luke Keller, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Ithaca College.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun casting its shadow on Earth’s surface. Because of a slight tilt in the moon’s orbit around the Earth we don’t get a solar eclipse every time the moon completes an orbit. Solar eclipses happen about twice a year, but the shadow rarely passes over populated areas often passing over the oceans. The eclipse of April 2024 will be a rare treat because the moon’s shadow will pass across central America and the continental U.S. so it will be visible to tens of millions of people including our communities right here in the Adirondacks. Join us for a presentation and discussion of solar eclipses, the details of how and why they happen, and how to safely observe them.

Mud Season Movie: Eclipse Over America
Apr

Mud Season Movie: Eclipse Over America

On August 21, 2017, millions of Americans witnessed the first total solar eclipse to cross the continental United States in 99 years. As in all total solar eclipses, the moon blocked the sun and revealed its ethereal outer atmosphere - its corona - in a wondrous celestial spectacle. While hordes of citizens flocked to the eclipse's path of totality, scientists, too, staked out spots for a very different reason: to investigate the secrets of the sun's elusive atmosphere. During the eclipse's precious seconds of darkness, they gathered new clues on how our sun works, how it can produce deadly solar storms, and why its atmosphere is so hot. NOVA investigates the storied history of solar eclipse science, and joins both seasoned and citizen-scientists alike as they don their eclipse glasses, tune their telescopes, and behold the Eclipse Over America.

Buildings will be open to the public from 10-3. The event provides a rare opportunity to go inside buildings and meet guides during the winter months. The 10-mile round trip on gently rolling terrain will take you past the Santanoni Farm and through the Forest Preserve on a wide, old road (no vehicle access).

Stop into the Gate Lodge Visitors Center to see interpretive displays and borrow snowshoes provided by the Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) if needed. The Artist’s Studio, a stone building near the Main Lodge on the shores of Newcomb Lake, will be open as a warming hut. Enjoy free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate by the wood stove. Visitors are also encouraged to take the half-mile trail that connects the Santanoni Road to the AIC’s 3.6-mile trail system. The center’s buildings will be open during the weekend. Event hosted by Adirondack Architectural Heritage, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Town of Newcomb, and the Adirondack Interpretive Center.

NOTE: Winter conditions can change quickly in the backcountry. Be prepared with extra warm clothing and adequate supplies for your trip.

We hope to see you there!

First Day Hike - Goodnow Mountain

Join us for the annual First Day Hike at Goodnow Mountain, January 1st at 9:00am – departure time 9:30pm. This 4-mile round-trip hike is considered moderately difficult in winter but is family and dog friendly - as long as they are on leashes (the dogs, not the family). It is strongly recommended that you have snowshoes or microspikes for this adventure, but if you don’t have them, we can provide some with ADVANCED notice. Preregistration is not required but very appreciated. Please email shample@esf.edu to preregister and/or to request snowshoes or microspikes. Remember, it will be winter, and it will be cold! Dress appropriately (no cotton!) for the weather!
