 Grand opening Reception Friday Evening
NMQ Annual Adirondack Craft Fair 2009
Sept. 12th and 13th at the
Newcomb Central School

Newcomb's Mountain Quilters was founded in 1991and continually has a membership of 20-30 people.  Our meetings are held twice a month, the first Monday and third Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Newcomb Fire Hall, located on State Route 28N next to the Town Offices.  Regular meetings are held September through June, and annual dues are $12.

The mission of our organization is to promote an appreciation of the art of quilting and to act as a supportive resource to all members of our community.

Programs are planned for some meetings and include mini workshops, demonstrations of new techniques and gadgets, refreshers and introductory lessons for newcomers, community service projects, and "do-your-own-thing" evenings.

We encourage members and guests to bring their quilts and other projects for Show-n-Tell.  Every month there is a Block-of-the-Month drawing, and we have a library of books, patterns and magazines available for loan.

NMQ has a working partnership with the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center, which hosts quilting classes taught by our members.  These classes are open to all members of the public and usually run for several weeks, taking participants from start to finish on a new quilt.

Community service is important to our group.  We donate to many charitable organizations throughout the year, both locally and regionally.  Some of our donations include monetary contributions to the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department, scholarships to graduating seniors planning to continue their education, and helping local families in need.  Additional financial contributions have been made to Essex County Mental Health, CASA (an advocate group for children in Essex County), Breast Cancer Research, the Dominican Republic Mission, the American Heart Association, and the Leukemia Foundation.  We also sponsor a child each summer for summer camp (Diabetes Camp, Camp Hole-in-the-Woods), and in 2007 we joined the local Methodist Church in adopting a platoon overseas.  Money is also donated to local families in need.

Every year our members make tote bags and fill them with personal items for women and children at the Essex County Shelter.  We also make lap robes for Hospice and Veterans, and we have made and donated "preemie" quilts to the neonatal unit at Glens Falls Hospital.

NMQ has two major fundraisers every year:  the Adirondack Craft Fair, held the weekend after Labor Day during Newcomb's Teddy Roosevelt Weekend, and the raffle of a quilt made and hand-quilted by our members.  We have also raised money for our scholarship fund through the sale of two community cookbooks.

In 2002 we held the first of what would become our biennial quilt show at the Visitor Interpretive Center.  The show was a huge success, as has been each show since.  Over 80 quilts made by our members are on display, many of which are for sale by the makers.  The show's opening reception is on the Friday evening of TR Weekend, complete with music by Peggy Lynn and refreshments made by our members.

Visitors are always welcome to our meetings and we encourage you to stop in at a any time to see what we are up to!
