This fund was started by Len Gereau with the profits from his Tahawus Book. It will provide educational scholarships to applicants that have a family connection to one or more relatives who lived in the village of Tahawus. History

Newcomb was established March 15th, 1828 in the “Center of the Adirondack Wilderness”. Native American legend suggests that both the Algonquin Nation and the Iroquois, or Haudenosaunee, traveled and fished the region in Colonial times.

Logging

Finch & Pruyn moved their company from Canada to Newcomb in 1928. The base was used as a supply point for their many logging camps. Many French Canadians came to the area for logging and chose to make it their permanent home. The farmers in the area often worked winters for the logging companies to supplement their income. The legacy of logging in this area continues to be evident today.

Mining

The Adirondack Iron & Steel Company was founded after an expedition to mine silver turned up plentiful quantities of iron ore. The National Lead Company later purchased Adirondack Iron & Steel Company and went on to discover titanium, which was used for paints during the Second World War. Many of the original buildings and the blast furnace still stand in Newcomb.
